Girls +Math + Physics = Bad Grades

By Toni Grace Lennox

“Maths and Physics are not boring” says a new campaign aiming to get more girls studying the subjects.

‘Yourlife’ launched today in an effort to help boost the number of girls’ studying maths and science.

According to the campaign these subjects are the ‘pathway to a successful future’ but claim there are fewer than 20% of 16-19 year olds study Maths, and half of mixed state schools had no girls study Physics in 2011.

Maths teacher and ‘Duck Quacks Don’t Echo’ star Dr Emily Grossman say the reason for the gap with girls in maths and science subjects is due to low self-confidence.

“Young girls at school, but women as a whole, tend to suffer from something called ‘Imposter Syndrome’, now not everyone obviously,  but more in women than in men where we tend to think that ‘oh I’m not really good at that or if I did do good in that I’ll be found out sometime'”

‘Imposter Syndrome’ is said to be when a person cannot ‘internalise their accomplishments’ according to founders Pauline R. Clance and Suzanne A. Imes.

According to Imes and Clance, people with imposter syndrome can also feel like ‘frauds’ and chalk up any accomplishments to good luck or timing, not intelligence.

The Yourlife campaign has Government backing and will begin speaking to the teens to improve the gender gap and prove that these subjects are the main route into well-paid careers.

Alex Salmond Backs BBC

Alex Salmond has endorsed a six-month suspension on BBC redundancies after journalists protested against the compulsory redundancies, this week.
Nearly a third of these redundancies will be taken from BBC Scotland.
The First Minister said Scottish coverage of news and current affairs is particularly crucial in the run-up to the independence referendum.
“BBC Scotland’s decision to frontload cuts from the licence fee settlement is particularly disappointing while Scotland is debating such a hugely important public decision,”
“The BBC should be prioritising its capacity to cover Scottish current affairs rather than attacking it or reducing it as is being done at the present moment.”
Mr Salmond also said: “I think that is a positive proposal.
“I see with dismay no fewer than nine out of a total of 30 compulsory redundancies across the BBC are to be in Scotland, and that should tell us that there is huge disquiet amongst staff, not just about their individual future but the collective ability of the BBC to serve Scotland.
“I think that points to the lack of ability within BBC Scotland to do that under current resources, which surely is going to be made much more significantly challenging if these cutbacks go ahead.”

The Madeline McCann Foundation secretary found guilty

The Madeline McCann Foundation secretary, Tony Bennett, has been jailed for publishing claims about the parents of the missing girl.

Bennett has been given a three-month prison sentence, suspended for a year and has been ordered to pay Kate and Gerry McCann’s court costs.

The 65-year-old was found to have breached an earlier court undertaking not to publish allegations linking Madeleine’s parents with her disappearance.

The former political candidate set up ‘The Madeline Foundation’ (TMF) three months after the toddler’s disappearance from a holiday apartment in Portugal to fund a private prosecution for alleged child neglect.

Bennett published the 60 page booklet: “What really happened to Madeleine McCann? – 60 Reasons which suggest she was not abducted”, which was effectively banned by the McCanns as the result of a High Court Order in November 2009.

Despite facing charges from the McCann’s in 2009, The Madeline Foundation published a longer version of “60 Reasons” titled “The Madeleine McCann Case File, which is still on sale.

The foundation has also released their campaign for the “Madeline Law”, a law to enforce the supervision of children at all times.

The foundation had this to say

“One of the key issues raised by what happened to Madeleine McCann was the question of whether it was right or wrong to leave three children all under the age of four on their own, whether for three hours, half an hour, or five minutes.

“We feel that a fitting way to remember Madeleine, whether she was abducted, or something else happened would be to tighten up the law so that all parents would be left in no doubt whatsoever that you should never leave young children on their own.”

CELTIC CONNECTIONS/ LENNOX

The annual Celtic Connections festival returns to Glasgow for its 20th birthday.

Vicente Amigo posed today, outside the Royal Concert Hall with his guitar in all of his Spanish flamenco glory, for reporters.guitar

Despite a whole range of acts assembled from all parts of the world such as; Australia, Greenland, Mexico, Cuba, India, USA, Canada and Ireland (to name a few) for the 20th anniversary there was not much a crowd gathered to hear the celebrations “kick off”.

Guitarist and Vocalist Paul “Ginty” O’Reilly with Fleadh Cheoil, based in Northern Ireland’s Derry, is disappointed with the lack of publicity for such an anticipated event.

“We’re here today because of the Celtic Connections festival but we’re not connected directly.

“We don’t really feel there is a lot of publicity circulating around which is disappointing but there are still a lot of great area’s in the Glasgow pub scene where we are performing while we’re here.

“Glasgow has great pubs for sessions.

“Last night we played Ben Nevis and we loved it.

“We always have a great time in Glasgow, you Scots are quite similar to us Irish.”

Celtic Connections have revealed that they are close to sold out.

This isn’t difficult to comprehend with previous years being so successful for the city Celtic Connection is looking to this year as the “cornerstone of Scotland’s cultural calendar”, looking to capture the past two decades of musical memories and are looking forward to another twenty years.

So never fear if you feel like joining in with the festivities they are running for 18 days from today.
