Pope Benedict XVI’s decision to step down as the head of the Roman Catholic church was brave and justified according to the Catholic chaplain of Glasgow Caledonian University.
Maureen McNally said the 85 year old “did what he thought was right for the church”.
She said: “It’s a historical event and a historical moment and I think he did the right thing. And at 85 years old, the time was right.”
“He’s a man of integrity and he won’t have made the decision off the cuff.”
It has been a difficult week for the Catholic church with Cardinal Keith O’Brien resigning due to “inappropriate behaviour” leaving Britain without a representative at the Conclave to appoint the new Pope.
And she doesn’t see a clear favourite for the role but hopes “it is a younger man who is dignified and compassionate”.
